An injection of something new. This phrase summarizes the work carried out by engineers from Husqvarna’s R&D department on the new 2008 SM 450 R model. All the modifications and additions made to this models were the result of testing carried out by the Chereyre brothers on their World Championship Supermoto machines: the frame, forks, sub-frame and filter box are all new. Plus the engine are now fitted with fuel injection.THE FRAME
Work carried out by Husqvarna engineers has made the new SM 450 R lighter, lower and narrower thanks to the use of completely new frame geometry. The new design now features an oval and box section semi-perimeter layout.
This design means:
Improved structural strengthLess weightHousing for the fuel injection systemImproved access and ease of assembly and servicingThe saddle is 10 mm lower and the radiator ducts stick out by 40 mm less. The bike is 4 kg lighter overall than the 2007 version. The oval and box section steel semi-perimeter frame has a steering angle of 26-degree. The advantages offered by the new frame include a more forward riding position. This element has been carefully planned so as to allow riders of widely varying builds to find their ideal position. The adjustable steering stops are no longer fixed to the steering head but are now on the frame. The footpegs have been brought forward by 15 mm. More compact, lighter aluminum engine and frame shields are available as optional extras. The narrower 8-liter fuel tank has been renovated. The filler cap too has been modified and is now easier to open. The bodywork now includes: new side panels and a number plate carrier resembling those on the SM 610. The rear suspension has been totally overhauled with a redesigned link, a new 30 mm shorter swingarm for improved traction as well as a new Sachs progressive action "offset" shock absorber. The rear suspension design means 40 percent less stress on the frame in comparison with the 2007 version. The Sachs shock absorber is now 18 mm as opposed to the previous 16 mm unit. The unit incorporates a valve system that optimizes oil flow and external adjustments. The rear sub-frame, saddle and filter box are new and together make a weight saving of 1 kg in comparison with the 2007 versions of the 450 and 510. The new frame / suspension design has allowed for the fitting of a straight intake duct that has greatly improved engine breathing characteristics. The brakes now feature a 320 x 5 mm Brembo disc, radial calipers and a racing pump. There is also a new steering head that is offset by 15 mm and accommodates a 205 mm hub. The forks are Marzocchi 50 mm units with newly calibrated black sleeves. The Tommaselli tapered handlebars have new steering head clamps and no cross bar.
ENGINE
The SM 450 engine now has electronic injection developed in collaboration with Mikuni. This includes a Mikuni "return-less" fuel injection system with 42 mm throttle body. New ECM - new management software. New Kokusan alternator unit. Although the new SM 450 comes with electric starter, a kick start mechanism is available as an optional extra. The engine has been renovated to provide improved reliability and now includes items such the new valve-lifting system, new chain tensioners and clutch unit. The new oil filter unit is housed in the right engine shield and has an oil level inspection port. The new exhaust systems now run along the left side. Engine looks too have changed. The cases are matte black while the cylinders and heads are aluminum colored. The rocker boxes are racing red.
